Managing stress is important in today's hectic world. A certain amount of stress is normal but too much stress can lead to health problems including ulcers, back pain, migraines, high blood pressure, stomach disorders and insomnia. Stress can also make you more vulnerable to life-threatening conditions such as infections, heart disease and cancer. Many people use methods to handle their stress that can be more damaging than the stress itself including alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, and food. There are better ways to manage your stress that can make it work for you instead of against you.

  • Regular
  • physical exercise has been proven to reduce the release of stress-related hormones creating a feeling of wellness.
  • Talking to someone about your problems can also help. A family member, friend or counselor may help you see the problem from a different perspective.
  • Know your limits. Stand up for yourself and do not take on more responsibilities at home or work than you can handle.
  • Take care of yourself by
  • eating right and getting enough sleep. When you are healthy, it is easier to handle stressful situations.
  • Get involved in activities that you enjoy. Play time is just as important as work time for your sense of well-being.
  • If you feel you can not handle your problems on your own, there are a number of private and group counseling programs that can help. Talk with your doctor about what would be right for you.
